Basic Principles
At its most basic, it is the ancient Chinese understanding there are “energy” flows (called Chi) that impact on our environment and our life in ways that can't be adequately explained or measured by western science.
Its origins date back more than 4000 years to early Chinese civilization. Centuries of observation of cause and effect allowed early practitioners to develop basic rules and understandings which are still evolving today. The successful adoption of Feng Shui principles in a modern urban environment requires a different approach to that of a peasant in rural China 100 years ago.
The aim is to apply those rules to achieve the appropriate balance of Chi energy flows within your surroundings to match your personal energy signature.

Heaven Luck This is the luck you were born with, and is the result of the time and place you were born. You can not change this luck, but you can modify its influence through appropriate application of Feng Shui.

Earth Luck This is the application of Feng Shui principles to maximise your chances of success, and minimise the negative occurances.

Man Luck This is what you achieve through application of knowledge and work effort.
So Feng Shui by itself is not a substitute for hard work and using your brain. Nor is it a recipe for guaranteed success. But what it can achieve is improved results, and more chance of good fortune.
